“And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” Colossians 3:17
When we choose to enter a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, we become a member of His family. A citizen in His kingdom. We exchange our sin for His righteousness, and the Lord’s Holy Spirit comes to live in us.
This does not mean we are perfect; it just means we belong to God. So, everything we do — taking out the garbage, paying for groceries, Googling, balancing books as an accountant, teaching, and everything else — we now do in the name of Jesus. We do it for Jesus. We do it with Jesus.
Maybe taking out the garbage made us grumpy before, but now we do it to bless our spouse. Paying for groceries was something we did without thinking, but now we make eye contact and thank the person behind the check stand. We used to follow all sorts of rabbit trails while Googling, but now we are careful not to look at things that do not glorify God. We did our work as an accountant and teacher so we would get a paycheck, and now, though we still appreciate the money, we do it with greater excellence because we are doing it for God.
The focus of our life changes when we do everything with and for Jesus. Even the simple things take on new meaning because we are doing them with Him, and that is an enormous privilege and something to be grateful for. This was demonstrated in the life of a monk who lived in the 17th Century — Brother Lawrence. In his book, Practicing the Presence of God, Brother Lawrence explains how he purposed in everything he did to thank God and be aware of his presence.
Awareness of God opens our eyes to all that He is doing, and all He wants to do, in and through us. It brings gratitude that overflows in good works. This is the abundant life the Lord wants us to live!
CONSIDER: When am I most aware of God’s presence in my life? What can I do to become more aware of Him in everything I do?
FURTHER STUDY: Read Ephesians 2:8-10 and think about the grace of God that has given you salvation and the good works God has for you to do.
PRAYER: Father, I want to live in Your name today. Thank you for wanting to be with me in everything I do! Show me the work you have for me to do and how I can partner with others to share your Gospel. Amen.
